We recently hosted a wellness class in which participants learned how to safely enjoy the outdoors in the summer, protect their skin from UV rays, and reap the many benefits of sunlight.

Let’s talk about Sun Safety!

There are plenty of benefits to getting some sun – vitamin D, reduce stress, physical activity – but if we’re not careful, we can put our skin and health in serious danger. Follow these simple tips to ensure you’re staying healthy this summer.

1. Shade and Protective Clothing

Find shade under a tree, umbrella, or shelter whenever possible.

Wear a hat, long-sleeves and pants, and sunglasses that already have UV protection in them.

2. Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

Use water-resistant sunscreen with at least 30 SPF

Re-apply after swimming, sweating or toweling off, or every 2 hours.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Hydrate before going outside and continue drinking water throughout the day.

An easy way to remember: drink at least 12oz of water every time you apply sunscreen.

4. Give Your Skin a Fighting Chance

Take shorter, cooler showers to protect natural oils, and use moisturizing lotion after showering to hydrate skin.

See a dermatologist for an annual skin assessment.

You can easily implement these strategies today and help your friends protect their skin! If you are interested in seeing the full wellness class, you can watch here. This class was taught by Certified Health and Life Coach Dr. Abby Horton.
